Returning the car calmly
The last twenty minutes of a rental cause most of the complaints. Here is how to make them boring.

Fill up within about ten miles of the return location and keep the receipt. Stations immediately beside airport return centres price accordingly.
Give yourself thirty minutes more than you think at the airport rental centre. The shuttle to the terminal is the part people forget to budget for.
Take a second set of photos at return, including the fuel gauge and the odometer, before you walk away.
Check your email for the closing receipt before your flight boards. Disputes are far easier to resolve while you are still in the same time zone as the branch.
