Heading back to Harry Reid Airport and the fuel light is giving you side-eye? Most rental agreements ask you to return the car with the same fuel level you picked it up with. Miss that, and the rental company may refuel it for you — usually at a much higher price per gallon than the pump, plus a possible service fee.

First, check your agreement. Look for words like “full to full,” “same to same” or “prepaid fuel.” If you prepaid for a tank, you usually don’t need to refill at all (and you typically won’t get money back for gas you leave in it). If it says full to full, keep reading.

Here’s the honest truth about stations closest to any airport rental return: they know you’re in a hurry, and prices right next to the return lanes are often higher than a few miles away. We don’t list exact prices because they change daily — instead, open a gas price app like GasBuddy or check AAA before you head back and compare a few stations along your route.

A simple plan: fill up roughly 3–5 miles before the Rental Car Center on Gillespie Street, not at the very last exit. Coming from the Strip, the main roads heading south toward the airport area give you plenty of everyday stations to choose from. Pick one on the right-hand side of your route so you’re not fighting left turns across Vegas traffic.

Fill until the pump clicks off, then take a photo of the fuel gauge and keep your receipt. If there’s ever a dispute about the fuel level, a time-stamped photo and a nearby receipt are your best friends. Do the same with the odometer while you’re at it.

Driving an EV? The same idea applies to charge level. Check your agreement for the required return charge, and look up chargers near the airport in advance — a fast charger can still take a while, so build that time into your day.

Finally, give yourself a buffer. Refueling, dropping off the car, the walk-around inspection and the free shuttle back to your terminal all take time, especially on busy weekends and big event days. Leaving 15 extra minutes for gas is a lot cheaper than a rebooked flight.
