Picture it: four friends, four big suitcases, and a rental SUV that looked roomy online. Then the hatch won’t close. The intermediate vs. standard SUV choice is mostly about one thing — luggage — so let’s sort it out before you book.

First, a quick translation. Rental companies sell classes, not exact models. An intermediate SUV is usually a compact SUV like a Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue or Jeep Compass. A standard SUV is a step up in size, often something like a Chevrolet Blazer or Ford Edge. You’ll get that model “or similar,” so think about the class, not the badge.

Intermediate SUVs are great for two to three people with medium bags or a couple of large suitcases plus carry-ons. Four full-size checked suitcases is where it gets tight: you may need to fold part of the back seat, which takes away a seat.

Standard SUVs give you more length and width in the cargo area. That usually means more room for big suitcases while keeping every seat open, though exact space depends on the model you get.

Want to check a specific car? Manufacturers publish cargo volume, and fueleconomy.gov lists interior and luggage measurements for many vehicles. Remember that cubic feet don’t tell the whole story — the shape of the cargo area and how high you can stack matter too.

Our rule of thumb: count big suitcases, not people. One to two large bags, intermediate is usually fine. Three or more large bags with a full car, size up to a standard SUV or consider a minivan. Golf bags, strollers or coolers? Size up again.

At the counter, if the car you’re offered looks small for your bags, ask before you load up. Swapping in the garage is much easier than repacking on the curb.

Quick answers

What is the difference between an intermediate and standard SUV rental?

An intermediate SUV is usually a compact SUV like a Toyota RAV4 or Nissan Rogue. A standard SUV is a size larger, like a Chevrolet Blazer or Ford Edge, with more cargo room. Both are rented “or similar,” so the exact model can vary.

Can 4 large suitcases fit in a Toyota RAV4 rental?

Usually not comfortably with every seat in use. Two large suitcases plus carry-ons is a more realistic fit; four full-size bags often means folding part of the rear seat. Size up to a standard SUV or minivan for four big bags and a full car.

How much luggage fits in a Chevy Blazer rental?

A Chevy Blazer is a standard SUV with more cargo room than a compact SUV, so it handles more large suitcases with all seats in use. Exact space depends on the model you receive, since rentals are “or similar.”
