You’re in the garage, keys in hand, and all you want is your maps on the big screen. Do airport rental cars have Apple CarPlay? Many newer rentals do, and Android Auto too — but it’s not guaranteed, because you’re booking a class, not a specific car.

Apple keeps a list of car models that support CarPlay, and most major brands appear on it. Still, support can depend on the trim and model year, so even a familiar model may behave differently from your own car.

Here’s the catch that trips people up: some cars connect wirelessly, while others need a USB cable. If the rental needs a cable and you didn’t bring one, you’re stuck with phone-on-your-lap navigation. Don’t be that person.

So pack a cable in your carry-on — ideally one that matches your phone and works with both USB-A and USB-C ports, since cars differ. A small adapter takes up almost no room and covers most cars.

To connect, plug in or open the car’s phone settings, then accept the prompts on your phone. On iPhone, make sure CarPlay is allowed in Settings. If nothing happens, try a different USB port; some only charge.

Do it while parked, before you leave the garage. Set your first destination too, so you aren’t fiddling with screens on an unfamiliar road. When you return the car, remove your phone from the car’s Bluetooth and CarPlay list to keep your data private.
