Returning a Rental Car at ORD: Where to Drop Off Passengers
When returning a rental car at ORD, you can drop your passengers at Departures first or stay together and take the airport train from the rental facility.

You’re heading back to O’Hare with passengers, suitcases and a rental car to return. Should everyone come to the rental facility, or can you unload at the terminal first? When returning a rental car at ORD, either approach can work: O’Hare allows passenger drop-offs at terminal Departures curbs, while its Airport Transit System connects the rental facility with the terminals.
If you want to drop passengers first, check which terminal their airline departs from before you approach the airport. Follow the Departures signs to the upper-level roadway at that terminal. That’s the airport’s designated terminal drop-off level—not the arrivals pickup roadway.
Use that stop to unload your passengers and their bags, then continue to your rental company’s return area. A passenger drop-off isn’t a rental return. Before splitting up, make sure you still have your driver’s license, phone, travel documents and anything you’ll need to finish the return and catch your flight.
For the rental-facility leg, Enterprise identifies O’Hare’s Multi-Modal Facility at 10255 W Zemke Blvd, Chicago, IL 60666. Check your own supplier’s return instructions and follow its signs when you arrive; reaching the shared facility isn’t the same as finding your company’s return area.
Prefer to keep everyone together? Return the car first and take your luggage with you to the Airport Transit System, or ATS—the airport train. O’Hare says the ATS serves the Multi-Modal Facility and Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 5. This avoids separating your group, but everyone needs to be ready to move their bags from the return area to the train and onward.
Choose based on your group rather than assuming one option is faster. Dropping passengers first may be useful if another adult can manage the bags while you return the car. Staying together may be simpler if you’re the only adult traveling with children. If you split up, agree on a specific meeting point before security rather than a vague promise to meet “inside.”
Leave room in your departure plan for the rental return and terminal transfer, whichever option you choose. For an early or late return, confirm your supplier’s procedure in advance. Enterprise lists after-hours returns at ORD, but that doesn’t establish another company’s rules or tell you how to complete its handoff.
