You’ve found a car for your Los Angeles trip, but the card in your wallet is a debit card. Can you rent a car at LAX with it? At Avis, the location page says debit cards are accepted from renters 25 and older. That’s a useful starting point—not a rule you can apply to every rental company.

Age matters even when you’re old enough to rent. Avis lists a minimum rental age of 21 at LAX, while its debit-card acceptance starts at 25. If you’re 21–24, don’t assume meeting the rental-age requirement means your debit card will qualify. Ask the location what payment method you’ll need before you book.

Next, check the deposit requirements, not just the rental price. A deposit is money the supplier may require as security for the rental. Ask how much available money your debit card needs, whether any funds will be held, and when they’re expected to become available again. Get the conditions for your particular reservation rather than relying on a general statement that debit cards are accepted.

Have your documents ready, too. Avis tells LAX renters to present a driver’s license and a credit or debit card at the counter; international renters must also present a passport. If you’re considering another supplier, check its own document requirements. Ask whether your debit-card rental needs anything beyond the standard pickup documents.

Before booking, review the final total alongside the deposit, cancellation conditions, mileage and fuel policy. Those checks help you separate the trip’s cost from the money you may need available at pickup. ROAM helps you prepare; bookings happen on Booking.com. Confirm the selected supplier’s payment conditions there and ask the LAX location about anything unclear.

Keep that confirmation and any written payment guidance accessible when you arrive. If the counter’s requirements differ from what you understood, ask the agent to identify the condition that applies and explain your options before you authorize a charge. The most useful pre-trip question is specific: “Can I collect this reservation with my debit card, at my age, and what money and documents must I bring?”
