Refueling Before Your LAX Rental Car Return

Make your LAX rental car return easier by checking your fuel agreement and planning a fill-up before you reach the return facility.

You’ve packed the bags and pulled up directions to LAX, but the fuel gauge needs attention too. Refueling before your LAX rental car return is worth planning before departure morning: if you’ve chosen to return with a full tank, fill up before reaching the return facility rather than counting on a pump there.

Start with your rental agreement, not an assumption. Enterprise’s LAX page specifically tells you to refuel before arrival if you chose the full-tank return option. Your own agreement determines what you need to do, so ask at pickup: “What fuel level should I bring it back with, and what happens if it’s short?”

Before leaving the pickup lot, compare the dashboard fuel level with whatever is recorded on your paperwork. If they don’t match, ask staff to correct or explain it while you’re still there. A quick dashboard photo is a useful personal record, though it doesn’t replace the supplier’s return requirements.

Choose your fuel stop as part of the drive back. Avis’s LAX guide says there isn’t an on-site gas station but that several are nearby. Use a current map to check a station’s location and hours, and look at the route from that station to your actual rental return—not just to the airport terminals.

Save your supplier’s return address before you set off. For example, Enterprise lists its LAX location at 5251 W 98th St, Los Angeles. Confirm the destination in your own rental instructions, then follow your company’s return signs when you arrive rather than assuming a general LAX navigation pin will take you to the right place.

Give the fuel stop its own time allowance. Enterprise warns that traffic around LAX can be heavy, and Avis advises adding 20–30 minutes to your estimated arrival time. Treat that as a buffer, not a guarantee or your entire flight-day allowance: you still need time for the vehicle handoff, travel to your terminal and airport procedures.

After filling up, keep the receipt until the rental is closed out and check the gauge before the handoff. If you can’t meet the agreed fuel level, tell the return staff and ask how your agreement handles it. That’s clearer than assuming an almost-full tank will count as full.
