LAX Car Rental With a Foreign License: What to Bring

Renting at LAX with a foreign driver's license starts with checking your supplier’s document requirements—Avis explicitly requires international renters to present a passport and driver’s license.

You’ve packed your passport, but will your foreign driver’s license be enough to collect your car at LAX? Check your rental company’s requirements before you fly. Avis’s LAX page says international renters must present both a passport and driver’s license, and tells customers to have their license and credit or debit card ready at the counter. Don’t assume that checklist settles every supplier’s rules.

Start with the company and pickup location shown on your reservation. Ask that location to confirm which documents it accepts for a license issued by your country. A useful question is: “I have a driver’s license from this country, written in this language. What exactly should I bring to collect my car?” Save the reply with your rental confirmation.

Also ask whether you need an International Driving Permit, often called an IDP, or a translation. The supplied Avis LAX guidance establishes the passport-and-license requirement, but doesn’t settle that question for every country or language. Get an answer before departure rather than assuming your license alone—or a translation alone—will be accepted.

Check payment eligibility separately from your driving documents. Avis’s LAX page lists a minimum rental age of 21 and says debit cards are accepted from renters 25 and older. That means its general instruction to bring a credit or debit card isn’t permission for every renter to use either one. If you’re using another supplier, verify its own age and payment conditions.

Keep your passport, license, payment card and any other documents the supplier confirms you need together in your carry-on. Before traveling, compare the names on those documents with your reservation. If there’s a difference, ask the supplier how to handle it before pickup; don’t wait until you’re standing at the counter with your bags.

Finally, avoid scheduling a tightly timed appointment immediately after pickup. Avis’s LAX guide warns about Los Angeles traffic and recommends adding time to your estimated arrival. Have your first destination ready, finish any document questions before leaving the counter, and give yourself room to get familiar with the car before driving away.
