The rental counter hands you a key and a parking space number, and that is usually the end of the help. The hour that follows decides whether the trip starts relaxed or tense.
Before you pull out, sit for ninety seconds. Move the seat and mirrors, find the headlight control, and confirm how the wipers work. Desert light changes fast and afternoon dust storms are real — you do not want to learn the stalk layout at 70 mph.
Photograph all four corners, the wheels, the windshield and the fuel or charge level. Two minutes of photos has settled more damage disputes than any argument at the return lane.
Then check the fuel policy on your agreement, not on memory. Full-to-full is almost always the cheapest option, and it is the only one where you control the price per gallon.
Finally, set your first destination before you move. Leaving the airport garage is the busiest driving you will do all week, and it is the worst possible time to be tapping a screen.
