CLT Rental Car Pickup: How to Walk to Your Counter

For on-airport rental car pickup at CLT, use the Lower Level Walkway to reach the rental counters instead of looking for a shuttle.

You’ve collected your bags at Charlotte and you’re looking for the rental shuttle signs. For on-airport rental car pickup at CLT, the useful answer is simpler: follow the walking route to the Rental Car Facility. The airport places the rental counters in the Level 2 lobby of the Hourly Deck, in front of the terminal.

First, allow for the walk from your gate to baggage claim. Avis’s CLT navigation guide notes that there are no trams or shuttles connecting the concourses. Don’t treat your flight’s arrival time as the time you’ll reach the rental counter, especially if you also need to collect checked bags.

Once you’re on the Arrivals/Baggage Claim Level, CLT’s official pickup directions say to take an escalator or elevator to the Lower Level Walkway. Follow that walkway, then take the elevator to the Level 2 lobby. Inside, head to the counter for your rental company.

Save those steps on your phone before you fly: baggage claim, Lower Level Walkway, elevator to Level 2. With rolling bags or a stroller, you can choose the elevator for the first level change too. If you lose the signs, ask airport staff for the Rental Car Facility’s Level 2 lobby rather than a rental shuttle stop.

Check that your reservation actually names the airport location before relying on this route; these are CLT’s directions for its on-airport facility. Also check your supplier’s counter hours if you’re arriving late. For example, Avis currently lists its CLT hours as 5 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily—not round-the-clock service. If a delay puts your pickup near closing, contact the rental company about its late-arrival procedure.

Keep your reservation confirmation handy so you can identify the right company and pickup location without digging through your luggage. At the counter, confirm where to find your assigned car and whom to contact if it isn’t in the indicated space. Getting to the lobby is one step; leave yourself time to find and inspect the car before you drive away.
