Can You Rent a Car at JFK With a Debit Card?

You’ve got a debit card ready for your trip—but will it get you a rental car at JFK? At Avis, the answer can be yes: its JFK page lists an eligible car group, a return airline ticket matching the end of your rental and authorization for a hold of at least $200 among the conditions. Don’t assume those terms apply to every rental company.

Start with the car group, meaning the vehicle category you reserve. Avis says your group must be eligible for debit-card rental, but the supplied location information doesn’t identify which groups qualify. Before choosing a car on Booking.com, ask Avis whether that exact category is eligible. A reservation alone isn’t proof that your payment method meets the pickup requirements.

Next, check your flight itinerary. Avis requires a return airline ticket that coincides with the end of your rental period. Have that itinerary ready to show, and ask which form of proof the counter accepts. If you’re driving home, continuing by train or flying back on a different date, confirm your eligibility before relying on this option.

Budget for the hold separately from your travel spending. The published condition is authorization for a hold of at least $200—not a promise that $200 is the entire amount you’ll need available. Ask the JFK location for the total funds required for your reservation, including rental charges, and how the hold’s release works.

Make the check specific to you: tell the location your reserved car group, rental dates, return-flight date and the type of debit card you plan to present. Ask what identification and other documents you’ll need, especially if you’re visiting from abroad. Avis lists its JFK phone number as 718-244-5400.

Sort this out before you make the airport transfer with your bags. JFK’s rental companies are at Federal Circle, which you can reach by AirTrain from any terminal; rides between the terminals and Federal Circle are free. Keep your itinerary and payment-policy notes somewhere you can reach easily at the counter.

If the counter says your card or documents don’t qualify, ask which requirement isn’t met before agreeing to a different vehicle or arrangement. Don’t assume a car-group change solves a payment problem. If a reservation change is needed, use Booking.com for the booking and the rental company for its acceptance requirements; ROAM provides guidance, not reservations or payments.
