Can you drive a Las Vegas rental car on unpaved roads?
Avis at LAS prohibits unpaved-road driving, so check your supplier’s rules and your destination’s access roads before planning a detour.

You’ve found a scenic stop outside Las Vegas, but the last stretch looks like dirt. Can you drive your rental car on unpaved roads? Don’t assume you can: Avis’s LAS location explicitly prohibits it. With another supplier, confirm the rules before making that stop part of your trip.
If you’re considering an SUV for the drive, separate two questions: what vehicle you want and where your rental agreement allows you to take it. Choosing a different car isn’t a substitute for checking the road restrictions. Ask about permission for your intended route, not just whether the vehicle seems capable.
Check the whole approach to your destination, especially the final stretch to a trailhead, viewpoint or parking area. Look for road-surface information from the destination’s official site or the agency managing the road. If the description is unclear, ask whether there’s a paved approach and paved parking rather than relying on the route a navigation app suggests.
Before booking, give the rental supplier the road or destination name and ask whether that route is permitted under your agreement. If access involves gravel or dirt, say so explicitly. Ask where the applicable restriction appears in the terms, and don’t treat a general description such as “well maintained” as an answer about rental permission.
At pickup, resolve any remaining uncertainty before leaving. The airport lists the Rent-A-Car Center at 7135 Gilespie Street, three miles south of LAS. Keep your proposed route handy so you can ask a specific question while reviewing the agreement, rather than trying to sort it out at the turnoff.
Build in a paved-road alternative. If you reach an unexpected unpaved section or a detour you haven’t checked, stop somewhere safe and reassess instead of treating the navigation prompt as permission. For an Avis LAS rental, keep the published unpaved-road prohibition in mind; with another supplier, follow its agreement and seek clarification when needed.
