Accessible rental car pickup at LAS: What to arrange

For accessible rental car pickup at LAS, plan the airport shuttle and your vehicle needs separately before you travel.

If you use a wheelchair or need help boarding, accessible rental car pickup at LAS starts with some reassuring news: the airport says its entire rental-center shuttle fleet is ADA equipped. That answers the shuttle question—not whether your rental vehicle will meet your needs. Confirm those two parts of the trip separately before you fly.

The Rent-A-Car Center is at 7135 Gilespie Street, about three miles south of the airport. Free shuttles connect it with the terminals, so plan for a transfer rather than expecting your rental car outside baggage claim. The airport lists special loading areas at Terminal 1, Terminal 3 and the rental center for travelers who need assistance.

Before departure, ask the airport where to find the special loading area at your arrival terminal and how to request any boarding assistance you need. Its rental-car page lists 702-261-5122 for more information about these accessibility arrangements. Save the directions somewhere you can reach easily after landing.

Next, contact your rental supplier about the vehicle itself. Explain what you need to do: transfer into a seat, stow a folded wheelchair, load a mobility scooter or use adaptive driving equipment. Ask whether the location can meet those needs, how much notice it requires and what it can confirm in writing. An accessible shuttle isn't confirmation of an adapted rental car.

Have your mobility device's dimensions handy, along with the number of travelers and bags. If your reservation says “or similar,” don't treat the pictured model as a promise. Ask how the supplier will verify that the assigned vehicle works for your needs, rather than relying only on a car-class name or photo.

Also confirm what happens once you reach the rental center. Enterprise's LAS instructions, for example, direct arriving renters to its counter for the agreement and keys after the shuttle ride. Ask your own supplier where to go and whether it can arrange any assistance you need between the shuttle drop-off, counter and vehicle.

At pickup, check the vehicle's entry height, transfer space and room for your equipment before leaving. If something doesn't work, tell the counter staff exactly what's wrong and ask what alternatives are available before accepting a substitute. Keeping your written confirmations and measurements ready gives you a useful starting point for that conversation.
